The Rockford Rotary 2017 Duck Race was completed last night around 6:16 p.m. After waiting about 12 minutes, the crowd gathered on the walking bridge and in the park saw a bunch of ducks round the bend for the last straight away.  As the group of ducks closed on the finish line, two ducks were out in front: the Rockford Housing Commission's Red/White and Blue duck and an anonymous well painted duck with a suspicious helicoptor implanted in its head.  The Housing Commission duck lead the whole way, but its victory was not without drama.  The lead duck snagged on a low hanging branch just 15 feet from the finish line.  This stumble allowed the helicoptor duck to close the gap.  Just when it looked like the Housing Commission duck would suffer a heart breaking defeat, it pulled free of the branch and zipped to the noodle line.   Tragedy turned to triumph as everyone celebrated the drama filled finish.  The Rockford Housing Commission will receive a beautiful wood carved trophy to display in their lobby for a year.

2017 Fastest Duck

Earlier in the day, the prettiest duck trophy was claimed by Herman's Boy sandwich decorated duck.  The duck had a bun for a hat and lettuce and cheese on its back.   Herman's Boy will receive the huge prettiest duck traveling trophy to display in its store for a year.    (We will post a picture of the Herman's Boy duck as soon as we can round one up).

Rockford Rotary is investigating claims that a "juiced" Big Daddy Duck has been spotted in the river the day before the Big Daddy Duck race.  Residents were alarmed to see a Big Daddy Duck moving "unnaturally fast" down the river.  One woman claimed that it was able to turn sharply to avoid objects and even seemed to back up at one point.  A local man added his own observations stating that the duck seemed to "have a mind of its own".  He said it was "disturbing" how quickly and smoothly it moved.  Wild rumors circulated that Bill Knape of Knape Industries in Rockford was responsible.  Rockford Rotary immediately dispatched volunteers to the dam area.  However, the spotters only found the usual array of healthy turtles swimming and enjoying themselves.  Rest assured we will keep an eye on the situation and check all race competitors thoroughly before Saturday's 6 p.m. race.  Come downtown Saturday and help us spot the "juiced" duck.

The Rotary Club of Rockford Michigan sponsors or hosts several events throughout the year.

Sweetheart Splash
February - this long standing and successful event was held for the last time in 2017.  Couples, individuals, and teams of people dress up and jump into the ice cold water near the dam in downtown Rockford.  A panel of judges awards trophies for the best team.  This year's couple winner was our President Jason Parker and his wife.  The event draws a big crowd and raises money for local charities.

The Big Daddy Duck Race
Rockford area businesses purchase ducks and decorate them for the race.  We build a float each year and display the ducks in the parade.  We also give out candy which is a lot of fun!  The 10" ducks are on display in our booth at the Start of Summer Celebration in downtown Rockford. People vote for their favorite duck by placing coins or bills in the jar next to it.  We count up the money and award a "prettiest duck" trophy to the winner.  At 6 p.m. on Saturday evening, we put the ducks in the water in front of the dam and race them to Richardson-Sowersby park.  We award a trophy for the "fastest" duck.  The money raised goes to local programs including sponsorship of the summer reading program at Hillview in Rockford.

Reading Rocks in Rockford
Reading Rocks in Rockford started as a Rotary event.  We created the event to encourage literacy in our town.  Recently, the Rockford Library has taken over the event and hosts it in the beginning part of the summer.  The goal is to get kids excited about reading and to keep them reading all summer.  Authors of children books attend the event and interact with young readers.  We help setup tents the event, and we staff the Hook-a-Book tent each year.  At Hook-a-Book, young readers receive a free book just for throwing their fishing line into the "water" and reeling it back in.  It is a very rewarding service experience for Rotarians.

STRIVE
Rockford Rotary sponsors and actively runs a program called STRIVE that pairs adult mentors with senior high school students.  The students are identified by the schools as being in danger of not graduating. Many of them simply need more help and/or an involved adult to get them over the hump and keep them motivated.  We award scholarships to the students for different things like highest GPA, most improvement, etc.  It is a very rewarding experience for mentors and students alike.

Fruit and Nut Sale
Each year Rockford Rotary sells delicious oranges and grapefruits from Florida and tasty nuts from Hermann's Boy to raise funds for the club.    If you want some delicious produce to supply you with natural vitamin C throughout the cold Michigan winter, please find a Rotarian and get your order in.  The sale takes place in October/November of each year.
